The world is in love with tea. Statistically, tea is the most popular drink in the world, second only to water. Many people enjoy tea for its flavor, others for its health benefits. And others, like us at Sin Columna, enjoy tea for everything it represents: from the taste to the ritual and to the serenity it brings. But what about our canine friends? Can dogs drink tea?

Read on if you want to find out more.

Can Dogs Drink Tea?

The short answer is yes, dogs can drink tea. In fact, there are a few benefits to giving your dog tea on occasion. Tea contains antioxidants, which help fight off harmful bacteria and toxins in the body.

Additionally, tea is a great source of vitamins and minerals like fluoride and potassium. All of these nutrients can be beneficial to your dog's health.

However, it's important to note that not all tea is created equal. Some teas – especially those with high levels of caffeine – can be harmful to dogs. So if you're going to give your dog tea, make sure to choose a variety of teas that are low in caffeine and other harmful chemicals.

Furthermore, keep in mind that dogs shouldn't have sugar -- so make sure the tea you give your furry friend is not sweetened (I know it's common sense for most people, but mistakes do happen, so it's better to err on the safe side).

What Tea to Give Your Dog?

As mentioned before, not all teas are created equal. More specifically, you should probably avoid giving your dog caffeinated tea. Black tea has the highest caffeine content (with approximately 50 mg of caffeine per cup), followed by green tea (with about 30 mg of caffeine per cup). So if you're going to give your dog tea, make sure it's either herbal tea or black tea that has been decaffeinated.

Some of the types of tea your dog will enjoy and reap health benefits from include:

  • Chamomile tea: Chamomile is a soothing herb that is often used to help dogs relax. It's also a great source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Ginger tea: Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help soothe upset stomachs in dogs.
  • Dandelion tea:  Dandelion tea is a great detoxifier and can help purge the body of harmful toxins.
  • Hibiscus tea: Hibiscus tea is high in antioxidants and can help improve heart health in dogs.

All of these teas are safe for dogs and will provide them with other benefits too -- so why not give it a try? Maybe tea time will be different from now on!
