Tea is a healthy drink consumed by millions in the US every day. Aside from green tea and black tea (clear contenders for the first place in the race for the most popular tea in the world, and at Sin Columna too), there are also other types of tea people love. Thai tea is among them. Does Thai tea have caffeine, though?

Read on and find out more about Thai tea, how much caffeine it has, and how you can make the most out of its beneficial properties.

What Is Thai Tea?

Thai tea is a type of tea that is brewed from black tea leaves, which are then combined with spices such as star anise, cinnamon, and cardamom. The drink gets its characteristic orange color from the addition of sweetened condensed milk and/or cream. Most often, Thai tea is served with ice and sweetened with sugar.

How to Brew Thai Tea

Brewing Thai tea is easy. You will need black tea leaves, water, sugar (optional), and milk or cream (optional).

Bring water to a boil and add the tea leaves. Allow the leaves to steep for 3-5 minutes. Add sugar (if desired) and milk or cream (if desired). Pour into a glass and enjoy!

In short, yes, Thai tea does have caffeine (as it is based on black tea).  A typical cup of Thai tea has about 50 mg of caffeine, which is about the same as a cup of black tea (but much less than in a cup of coffee, which can get as high as 100 mg of caffeine).

  • improved cognitive function
  • educed anxiety
  • decreased risk of heart disease

Thai tea is a delicious and healthy drink that can provide a variety of benefits. Next time you are looking for something to drink, consider giving Thai tea a try! DO keep in mind though: try to refrain from adding sugar to your Thai tea if you want to make the most out of its benefits.
