You have all the reasons in the world to drink herbal teas: they are healthy, delicious, and widely available in a million-and-one combinations and blends. Does herbal tea contain caffeine, though?

The tea specialists at Sin Columna have the answer. Read on if you want to find out more.

Understanding the Different Types of Tea

The most popular type of tea in the world is black tea, which is made from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Green tea, one of the close seconds in terms of popularity, is also made from the Camellia sinensis plant, but the leaves are not dried and oxidized like black tea leaves.

This means that green tea contains less caffeine than black tea. Oolong tea is made from partially oxidized leaves, so it falls somewhere in between black and green tea in terms of caffeine content.

Herbal teas, on the other hand, are an entirely different type of tea. Unlike the aforementioned teas, herbal teas are made from different herbs (such as chamomile, peppermint, and so on).

Does Herbal Tea Have Caffeine?

In short, no, herbal tea does not have caffeine because it is not made from tea leaves, but herbs.  However, it is worth mentioning that you will find a lot of types of tea on the market that are blended with either green or black tea. Some of them may be presented as fruit tea, but, in fact, have black tea at their basis. Be sure to read labels, particularly if you are very careful about your caffeine intake!

Will herbal tea energize you if it doesn't have caffeine?

Well, not really -- and, at the same time, yes. Herbal tea is not a stimulant like caffeine is, so it doesn't really have the same effect. However, that doesn't mean that herbal tea isn't energizing – on the contrary, many of them are quite refreshing and uplifting.

For example, chamomile tea is a great choice if you're looking for something to relax with after a long day. However, if you're looking for an energizing herbal tea, try something like ginger or mint tea. They both have a revitalizing effect on the body and mind.

Furthermore, herbal teas have other health benefits as well. Here are some of the most common ailments different types of tea are used for:

  • Peppermint tea:  indigestion, nausea, diarrhea
  • Chamomile tea: insomnia, anxiety, stress
  • Ginger tea: motion sickness, morning sickness, upset stomach
  • Earl Grey tea: headaches, nervousness

So the next time you're wondering "does herbal tea have caffeine" remember that the answer is no – but that doesn't mean it won't give you a good, uplifting feeling!

Does Herbal Tea Have Caffeine: FAQs

Are Twinings herbal teas caffeine free?

Some Twinings herbal teas do not contain caffeine. However, some of their herbal blends include black tea, which does contain caffeine. To be sure (particularly if you want to avoid caffeine), always read the labels as they will indicate what the specific blend includes. This stands true for other tea brands as well.

Can herbal teas contain caffeine?

No, herbal teas do not contain caffeine because they are made from different herbs, not tea leaves. However, since some tea blends are made with black tea and herbal tea, you might want to check the labels to make sure your chosen variety is caffeine-free (if that's what you're looking for, of course).
