Imagine a hot summer day -- you know it, the kind where the grounds seem to melt under the power of the sun. What could be better for a bit of well-deserved cooling off, other than a large glass of iced tea? You'd surely love it -- but if you're conscious of health, you might wonder "does iced tea have caffeine?".

To understand the relationship between iced tea and caffeine, you should first understand what goes into a normal ice tea.

In general, iced tea is made by steeping black tea leaves in hot water and cooling it down (with ice, or naturally). Alternatively, you can also make a cold brew iced tea by leaving the tea leaves and the water in the refrigerator for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours).

Some variations include green tea and other types of tea, as well as different flavors (peach and lemon being among the most popular ones). However, black tea tends to lie at the basis of most ice tea options available out there.

If you suffer from certain medical conditions (like high blood pressure for example), you may wonder "does iced tea have caffeine" -- and rightfully so. Health should always come first.

Well, yes. Iced tea does have caffeine when it's made with black tea because black tea has caffeine as well. As a general rule, one can of iced tea contain around 30 mg of caffeine.

If you're looking to avoid caffeine or are particularly sensitive to it, you might want to avoid drinking iced tea or might want to go for a cold brew instead (which has significantly less caffeine). However, if you're not overly concerned about it, iced tea can be a refreshing and satisfying drink choice.

Caffeine-Free Iced Tea Options

There are a lot of reasons you might want to avoid caffeine, and that's totally fine. If you do enjoy your iced tea, though, and if you want to make sure you don't put any amount of caffeine in your body, then the next best thing is to opt for herbal tea.

Some herbal teas that work great when iced include chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, rose hip and rooibos. You could also go for some fruit tea options such as raspberry, blueberry, or peach. As long as you're not looking for a black or green iced tea option, you'll be good to go!
